Meet Caleb Connaughton 

Hi, I’m Caleb.

I’m a certified piano technician with a background in music, audio, repair, and hands-on mechanical work. 

Before starting Caleb’s Piano Care & Repair, I spent years working as a sound technician at NAL Sound. A lot of the job was about solving problems efficiently in the background so the musician could focus on playing. Some days I was setting up stages and running cables, setting up amps, or preparing in-ear monitors. Other days I was troubleshooting audio problems, balancing levels, repairing instruments, tuning drums, or making small adjustments so everything felt right for the musicians.

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In addition to playing piano, I’ve been playing guitar and bass since 2008, and also the drums since 2011. Over time, playing different instruments helped train my ears. I learned how tone, rhythm, resonance, and feel can completely change the experience of playing or listening to music. 

I have always loved discovering new music, whether it is something familiar or something completely different from what I usually listen to. Fun fact: I have over 9,000 songs saved on my Spotify. One of my playlists has more than 35 days of music on it! I love to listen, explore, and understand music from as many angles as I can.

That background influences the way I approach piano work. When I listen to a piano, I am not only listening for pitch. I am listening for tone, balance, resonance, response, and the overall feeling of the instrument. Years of playing guitar, bass, drums, and listening to many styles of music have helped me develop an ear for the details that make an instrument feel more expressive.

What I love about piano work is how it brings together music, mechanics, tone, touch, repair, and problem-solving. Tuning is an important part, but I am just as fascinated in the deeper work that helps a piano feel and sound its best: regulation, repairs, voicing, action work, and rebuilding.

A piano is expressive, but it is also incredibly mechanical. Every note relies on felt, wood, strings, tension, leverage, friction, timing, and countless small adjustments working together. That mix of listening, troubleshooting, patience, and hands-on detail is what drew me into piano technology, and it connects easily to the skills I developed through many years of sound work and instrument troubleshooting.

I enjoy helping a piano become more reliable, responsive, and satisfying to play. Sometimes that means bringing an out-of-tune piano back to life. Sometimes it means fixing a sticky key, an uneven touch, a buzzing sound, or another mechanical issue that has been bothering the player for a long time. Other times, it means helping a client understand what their piano needs now, what can wait, and what kind of care will make the biggest difference.

My goal is not just to service pianos, but to help people feel more connected to their instruments. Whether I am working on a family piano, a teaching studio instrument, or a piano that has not been maintained in years, I bring the same care, patience, and attention to detail to every job.

In my free time, I love spending time with my family, playing music, enjoying the outdoors, or learning more about pianos.
