Signs Your Piano May Need Repair

Piano repair is appropriate for owners experiencing mechanical problems, including:

• One or more keys does not come back up after being played

• The keys feels inconsistent from note to note

• A note sounds weak, delayed, or does not sound

• Pedals that do not work correctly

• A hinge, pedal component, or cabinet part has broken

• A foreign object is interfering with the piano action

• The piano cannot be tuned properly because of a mechanical issue

• Repeating or double-striking notes

• Buzzing, clicking, rattling, or squeaking sounds

• Parts can be heard knocking or rubbing together

• Broken or disconnected internal parts

• Objects that have fallen inside the piano

• Damage discovered during moving or storage

Repairs may be completed as a separate appointment or combined with tuning when the problem is relatively minor.

Photos and short videos can sometimes help identify the likely issue before the appointment.

What Happens During the Appointment?

The piano will be inspected by examining the affected area. Depending on the issue, this may require removing cabinet panels, action components, keys, or the pedal.

Once the cause is identified, Caleb will explain:

• What is causing the problem

• Whether it can be repaired during the appointment

• Whether replacement parts are required

• Whether an original part is still available

• Whether the repair is safe to proceed 

• The expected labour and cost

Some replacement parts on certain pianos may be discontinued. Caleb may be able to create or adapt a practical repair, and any limitations will be explained before proceeding.

How Long Does A Piano Repair Take?

Simple repairs may take around one hour. More involved work may require several hours, replacement parts, or a second visit.

The appointment length depends on the accessibility of the affected component, the extent of the damage, and the associated labour involved. 

Piano Repair Pricing

Piano repair starts at $80 per hour, with a one-hour minimum.

If Caleb attends the appointment, inspects and disassembles the piano, and determines that the problem cannot reasonably be repaired, a $50 diagnostic visit fee is applied instead.

Parts and specialized materials are additional unless otherwise stated.

• Whether a custom part or modification is needed

• Tariffs on replacement parts 

• The amount of disassembly required

• Damage caused by moisture, rodents, pests, or liquid

• Travel outside the primary service area
