Vancouver is a beautiful place to live, but our climate can be challenging for maintaining acoustic instruments.


Acoustic pianos are built from a combination of moisture-sensitive materials, including wood, felt, leather, glue joints, metal hardware, and high-tension steel strings. As the relative humidity in a room changes, these materials naturally expand and contract. Higher humidity can cause wooden and felt components to absorb moisture and swell, while drier air can cause those same materials to release moisture and shrink slightly.

This is one of the main reasons a piano can sound different from season to season, even if it has not been moved or played very much.

For families, students, and teachers, the most important thing to know is that a piano usually does best in a stable environment!

The Biggest Problem Is the Humidity Swings

Pianos perform best under consistent conditions that are neither too wet nor too dry, with an optimal relative humidity around 40–45%. It can handle a climate that is somewhat dry or somewhat humid if it stays that way consistently.

It is when the environment swings back and forth that it can potentially cause more issues. 

When a piano constantly flips through cycles of damp air, dry indoor heating, and changing seasonal conditions, the internal materials are constantly expanding and contracting. Over time, this can make the piano less stable and may contribute to tuning instability, sticky keys, loose parts, glue joint issues, or other mechanical changes.


This is especially relevant in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland because many homes experience:

Wet, rainy seasons

Damp basements or ground-level rooms

Dry indoor air from heating

Seasonal temperature changes

Windows, vents, and exterior walls

How Humidity Affects Tuning

When the wooden soundboard absorbs moisture, it may expand a little. This in turn increases the tension on the strings and may cause the pitch to rise.

When the air becomes drier, the soundboard can contract. This can reduce the tension in the strings and may cause the pitch to drop.

Some notes sound more out of tune than others

Octaves do not sound clean

The piano sounds different after a seasonal change

The piano does not hold its tuning as long as expected


Regular tuning helps keep the piano at a stable pitch, but if the piano lives in a room with large humidity swings, it may still drift more quickly between appointments.

How Humidity Affects Touch and Key Response 

The keys, bushings, action parts, felt, and wooden components all need to move freely. When the air is damp, these parts can also absorb moisture and swell slightly. This increases the friction and makes certain notes feel slower, heavier, or less responsive.

Sticky keys

Slower key return

Keys that feel heavier than usual

Notes that do not repeat as easily

An action that feel sluggish or uneven 

When the air becomes very dry, some materials now shrink. This can sometimes contribute to clicking, looseness, rattling, or changes in regulation.

Not every sticky key or uneven note is caused by humidity, but humidity is one of the first things worth considering, especially in a coastal climate like Vancouver. 

Where You Place Your Piano Is Important 

Try to avoid placing your piano:

Over or beside a heating vent

Next to a radiator or baseboard heater

In front of a large window

In direct sunlight

Beside an exterior door

Against a damp exterior wall

On a damp concrete floor

Direct heat, sunlight, drafts, and dampness can all create unstable conditions around the piano.

When possible, an interior wall is often a better choice than an exterior wall. Interior walls are usually less affected by outdoor temperature changes and condensation. This does not mean every piano on an exterior wall will have problems. But if you have a choice, a stable interior location is usually better. 

Direct Sunlight Is Especially Hard on Pianos

Direct sunlight can warm the piano unevenly, dry out parts of the instrument, fade the finish, and contribute to tuning instability. Over time, too much sun exposure may also affect wooden parts, glue joints, keys, and other materials.

If your piano is near a bright window, consider using curtains or blinds during the sunniest parts of the day.

A small change like this can help protect both the sound and the appearance of the piano.

Signs Your Piano May Be Reacting to Humidity

  • It goes out of tune quickly after seasonal changes

  • Keys feel sticky or slow during damp weather

  • The piano sounds different in winter than summer

  • Buzzing or rattling appears and disappears

  • Wood parts look swollen, warped, or separated

  • The piano feels less responsive than usual

  • The room feels damp, musty, or very dry


These signs do not always mean there is a serious problem. Sometimes the piano simply needs tuning, minor adjustment, or a better room environment.

However, if the same issues keep coming back at certain times of the year, humidity may be part of the cause.

What Humidity Level Is Best For A Piano?

Many piano care recommendations suggest keeping the piano around the low to mid 40% relative humidity range when possible.

The exact number is less important than consistency. A piano sitting steadily around 40–45% relative humidity will usually be happier than a piano that swings from very damp to very dry throughout the year.

A simple room hygrometer can help you understand what is happening around the piano. These small devices measure relative humidity and can show whether the room is staying reasonably stable or changing dramatically from season to season.

For Vancouver homes, a hygrometer can be helpful because the room may feel normal to you, but the piano may still be experiencing large humidity changes.

How to Help Your Piano Stay More Stable

  • Keep the piano away from vents, heaters, and direct sunlight

  • Avoid damp basements or garages

  • Use curtains or blinds if sunlight hits the piano

  • Keep the room temperature reasonably steady

  • Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity

  • Consider a room humidifier or dehumidifier if needed

  • Tune the piano regularly

  • Ask your piano technician if humidity control would help


Small improvements in the piano’s environment can help it stay in tune longer and feel more consistent throughout the year.
